Migraine Medication: Get Familiar With Sumatriptan Side Effects Before Use

Migraine is a common illness that affects over 10 million adults in the United Kingdom today. While this illness is incurable, you can always treat or manage its symptoms with the best tablets for migraine, such as Sumatriptan tablets, which are available at Ashcroft Pharmacy.

In case you don’t know, Sumatriptan is a migraine drug that’s only available for purchase based on a doctor’s prescription. Although this medication won’t help cure your migraine, it is effective in relieving your symptoms.

As with other drugs at Ashcroft Pharmacy, you should understand everything about Sumatriptan tablets before you go ahead to use them for your migraine treatment. So, let’s get started!

Do Sumatriptan tablets have any side effects?

It’s hard to see a drug today without any side effects. Like many drugs, migraine medications, such as Sumatriptan tablets, have a few side effects. Of course, not all patients experience these effects. Some can take this medication and get the best treatment experience without feeling no adverse effects.

However, others can take the medicine and experience the following side effects:

  • Feeling hot or cold
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Hot flushes
  • Tingling or profiling sensation in the skin
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Pain in the neck, throat, or jaw
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • General weakness of the body
  • Temporary increase in blood pressure

You need to understand that chest pain is a very common side effect of Sumatriptan. The good thing about this severe side effect, however, is that it’s temporary and tends to disappear rapidly. If it doesn’t pass rapidly, you might need to visit your doctor.

Serious adverse effects of Sumatriptan

The symptoms listed in the previous section are less severe. You need to understand that using Sumatriptan tablets can also introduce many serious adverse effects. Visit your doctor immediately as you start experiencing the following rare, serious effects. Also, call for emergency services if the effects may be life-threatening.

  • Chest discomfort, shoulder pain, very fast heart rate, breathing difficulty, dizziness, general weakness, and irregular heartbeat. All these side effects are warning signs you may have a cardiovascular disease, such as a heart attack.
  • Neck/chest tightness, pain, or pressure.
  • Symptoms of serotonin syndrome, such as agitation, twitching muscles, confusion, hallucinations, quick heartbeat, lack of rest, shaking, excessive sweating, dilated pupils, tight muscles, and diarrhoea.
  • Symptoms of digestive issues include nausea, abdomen pain, vomiting, and diarrhoea (with blood).
  • Brain haemorrhage and stroke symptoms, such as headache, speaking difficulty, drooping face, numbness, weakness on one side of your body, and lack of balance.
  • The serious adverse effects of using Sumatriptan tablets can also lead to mental illness. Symptoms of this mental illness include anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts.

Maximum dose of sumatriptan

To avoid any adverse side effects, you need to use your migraine Sumatriptan the right way. You can only do this if you understand how the dosage of these tablets works.

  • The maximum suggested dose of Sumatriptan tablets is 300 mg every 24 hours. You can either go for the 6 Sumatriptan 50 mg tablets or 3 Sumatriptan 100 mg tablets. Avoid using more than this recommended dosage for effective results and little to no adverse effects.

migraine treatment.

Depending on the dose of Sumatriptan tablets you’re looking for, you can always check Ashcroft Pharmacy to find your choice. We sell both doses and you can buy Sumatriptan online.

The standard (recommended) dosage is the Sumatriptan 50 mg tablets. For medical reasons, buyers also go for the 100 mg dosage.

Regardless of your choice, always avoid overdosing on your Sumatriptan tablets. In case of any overdose, you need to speak to your doctor immediately.

Is it okay to consume alcohol with Sumatriptan

Alcohol consumption does not affect the efficiency of Sumatriptan. The only issue, however, is that it’s not advisable to consume too much alcohol during migraines. You may end up complicating your migraine symptoms with alcohol consumption.

If you must drink alcohol, ensure you only take a little bit of it. Too much alcohol could result in dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and hot flushing – all these effects are migraine triggers.

Should pregnant women take Sumatriptan?

For now, we don’t have sufficient data or research to confirm the effect of Sumatriptan tablets on pregnant and nursing mothers. As such, we won’t advise you to take this migraine medication with your condition.

If you need migraine treatment, we advise you to speak to your doctor first. Your doctor will recommend the best treatment option to manage your migraine symptoms during pregnancy. For more details regarding the use of Sumatriptan tablets during pregnancy, you should visit our official website.

Should you operate heavy machinery when on Sumatriptan?

Sumatriptan tablets are very effective but as you already know, these tablets can always make you drowsy, dizzy, or sleepy. That aside, they can also slow down how you become aware of certain things.

As such, you should avoid driving any vehicle or operating any heavy machinery when on Sumatriptan. In addition, you should stay away from any activity that could result in hazardous effects.

Sumatriptan gives adverse effects for some patients while others may not even experience any symptoms. Until you’re sure this migraine medication does not affect you, we’ll advise that you stay away from heavy machinery and driving.

Effects of Sumatriptan after interacting with other medications

Certain drugs tend to interact quickly with Sumatriptan. This could affect the effectiveness of the medicine and trigger other adverse effects.

  • Pain relievers and anti-sickness drugs, such as ibuprofen, aspirin, and paracetamol, are very safe with Sumatriptan.
  • Antibiotics and contraceptive pills are also safe with this migraine medication.
  • Unsafe drugs include antidepressants, ergotamine-containing drugs, and MAO inhibitors.
  • Other ‘triptan’ migraine medicine, such as Almogran, Naramig, Migard, and Maxalt, are also not ideal with Sumatriptan. Too much dose of the triptan drugs will most certainly harm you.

Existing health conditions & Sumatriptan

If you have no existing health conditions, Sumatriptan is very effective for managing your symptoms. However, with existing health conditions, you certainly need to visit your doctor to understand the effect of this drug on your health conditions. As effective as this migraine medication is, it can worsen your existing health conditions if you don’t do your findings properly before use.

Is Sumatriptan a habit-forming medicine?

The simple answer is no; Sumatriptan tablets aren’t addictive. They are short-term tablets that you need to take at the right time to manage or control your migraine symptoms. Too much use of this migraine medication is not advisable, as you may experience withdrawal symptoms. It could also worsen your migraine headaches instead of relieving them.

Speak to your doctor in case you’re already taking too much Sumatriptan

Wrapping up

Sumatriptan is one of the most effective migraine medications you can rely on today for quick relief of your symptoms. However, this medication has a few minor effects, such as drowsiness, sleepiness, and dizziness. It also has a few adverse effects, which you’ll find in the body of this post.

Sumatriptan has its strengths and weaknesses. However, its strengths outweigh its weaknesses. Get familiar with all the symptoms of Sumatriptan and speak to your doctor if the symptoms persist for a long time.
